Passive Fire Protection Explained: Why It’s Essential for Building Safety
What is Passive Fire Protection?
Passive Fire Protection is the precautionary measures taken within a building’s structure which are designed to stop the spread of fire and smoke, without needing activation. An example of this is a fire door. This is different to active systems like fire extinguishers or alarms as these need activating in some form. Passive Fire Protection measures are always working in the background.
Some key features of Passive Fire Protection include:
- Fire resistant walls, floors, ceilings and doors
- Compartmentation to isolate a fire and smoke within a certain area
- Fire-resistant glazing and intumescent products
- Fire-stopping around pipes, cables and ductwork.
These components work together with the aim of containing a fire to a single area, as well as maintain structural stability. Furthermore, Passive Fire Protection helps to protect any means of escape, i.e. corridors or stairwells.
How can Dorplan contribute to Passive Fire Protection?
Dorplan play a key part in supporting Passive Fire Protection through the supply of certified fire doorsets, tailored to not only your building’s needs, but aesthetics.
We supply and manufacture fully compliant FD30, FD60, and higher-rated door sets, tested to BS 476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 standards. Our doorsets are precision-engineered.
Passive Fire Protection Failures in Doorsets
While Passive Fire Protection is designed to work in the background, its effectiveness depends entirely on how well it is specified, installed and managed on site. This is often where projects begin to fall short.
Fire doorsets are sometimes treated as standard building products, with components swapped or value engineered to meet budget pressures. In reality, a doorset is a fully tested system, and even minor changes can invalidate certification and compromise performance.
Installation is another critical point of failure. Incorrect gaps, missing seals or poorly fitted hardware can all prevent a door from performing as intended, allowing fire and smoke to spread and undermining compartmentation.
Uncontrolled changes during construction, combined with a lack of clear documentation and oversight, can further weaken fire protection measures. By the time issues are identified, remediation is often costly, disruptive and, in some cases, unavoidable.
