Why Acoustic Doorsets are Essential for Urban Multi-Residential Projects

The Rise of Multi-Residential projects and its challenges:

As UK cities continue to grow, multi-residential developments such as city centre flats are increasing in demand each year. With this comes new challenges, with more people living in close proximity within flats, high quality acoustic doorsets are essential to resident well-being and regulatory compliance.

One of the most common complaints when living within a flat or apartment is noise; this could be from neighbouring flats, communal areas or even noisy lifts and corridors. Acoustic doors provide sound insulation which enhances privacy across units.

What is an acoustic doorset and how do they work?

An acoustic doorset is designed to minimise sound travel between units within multi-residential buildings. These are designed to reduce noise by containing special insulation, airtight seals and construction to block sound waves. A dB rating indicates the level of sound reduction, a standard door has a dB rating of 20-30 while a soundproof door is around 40-60 dB.

Where should acoustic doors be installed in a multi residential building?:

Within a multi-residential building, not every door needs to have an acoustic rating, however ensuring they are used in the right locations is key. The most common areas for acoustic door placements include:

  • Flat entrance doors
  • Between adjoining flats
  • Communal spaces
  • Service rooms

Dorplan PuraSound:

At Dorplan, we know the importance of high quality acoustic doorsets, without having to compromise on design.

Our PuraSound range  uses a variety of cores, seals and glazing types to achieve dB ratings from 29dB up to 55dB. 29dB might block normal conversation whereas 50dB could block noise from a loud tv.

To increase acoustic integrity automatic drop seals are installed into the bottom of doors and concealed from view. These seals have added benefits in reducing draughts, light penetration and odour circulation.
