Famous Doors: Palmer House

The Palmer House, a historic hotel located in downtown Chicago, is renowned for its exquisite Peacock Doors. The hotel itself has a rich history and is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the United States.

The Palmer House was originally built by Potter Palmer, a prominent Chicago businessman, and his wife Bertha Honoré Palmer. The original Palmer House opened on September 26, 1871, but tragically, it fell victim to the Great Chicago Fire just 13 days later. Undeterred, Palmer quickly decided to rebuild the hotel, and the second Palmer House opened its doors in 1873. This new hotel was a luxurious and innovative establishment for its time.

The Peacock Doors at the Palmer House are a stunning example of craftsmanship and artistic design. These intricately carved and gilded doors were crafted by French artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, who was renowned for his work in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. The Peacock Doors were originally installed in 1927 as part of an extensive renovation of the Palmer House. The doors feature a peacock motif, with vibrant colours and detailed carvings depicting peacock feathers.

The symbolism of the peacock is significant, representing immortality, renewal, and beauty in various cultures. The use of such a symbol on the doors of a grand hotel like the Palmer House adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Over the years, the Palmer House has undergone several renovations and changes in ownership, but the Peacock Doors remain a notable and cherished feature of the hotel. They serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Palmer House and its commitment to preserving its historical charm.

Visitors to the Palmer House can still admire the Peacock Doors, which stand as a beautiful and iconic representation of the hotel’s rich history and dedication to artistic excellence.
